Perilous Parking at OHSU?

AFSCME Local 328 would like to ensure our membership is aware that there has a been a rash of car thefts and vandalism at OHSU, across both the Marquam Hill and South Waterfront campuses. Catalytic converters have been the main target; however, folks who park at OHSU should be mindful of the valuables they keep in their vehicles as well. These thefts typically target popular car models, such as the Toyota Prius and mid-2000 Hondas.

Our union has spoken with OHSU Public Safety, who have proposed deterrents such as gates, cameras and emergency phones. Local 328 has proposed to HR that OHSU reimburse employees for any out-of-pocket costs, such as insurance deductibles, resulting from car theft or vandalism experienced while parked at OHSU. HR is running that request through OHSU’s Risk Management department.

In the meantime, we want all of our members to be safe and sensible. Stay aware of your surroundings while parking at OHSU (both night and day) and keep in mind these tips on how to protect your vehicleDO NOT ENGAGE if you come across an active crime being committed — instead, contact Public Safety’s emergency line at (503) 494-4444. If you experience car theft or vandalism, make a report to Public Safety at (503) 494-7744 or pubsafe@ohsu.edu.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
