Trans Day of Remembrance

[Content Warning: This statement includes references to and/or discussion of transphobia, violence, hate crimes, death, workplace violence, healthcare biases, and discrimination.]

On this Transgender Day of Remembrance, Local 328 stands in solidarity with our transgender members. We seek to recognize the unique challenges they face and honor the lives of those lost to transphobia, discrimination, and violence. We affirm our commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and safe workplace for all, regardless of gender identity. We believe in leveraging our collective voice to influence positive change and dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality.

Inclusivity is at the core of what we fight for, and we recognize that a diverse healthcare workforce contributes to a more compassionate and effective patient care environment. We celebrate the invaluable contributions of our transgender colleagues whose diverse perspectives enrich our profession. It is incumbent upon us to create an atmosphere that encourages openness, understanding, and support for all, irrespective of gender identity.

Today especially, we aim to utilize our platform to advocate for the rights and dignity of our transgender members. As representatives for healthcare professionals, we acknowledge the importance of addressing disparities, discrimination, and violence faced by transgender individuals within and beyond our industry. We do this not only for our own present members, but also for those members of the community whose lives have been lost due to the intolerance and hatred perpetuated by others.

By championing inclusive practices, we aim to eliminate disparities in healthcare access experienced by the transgender community. We believe in leveraging our collective voice to influence positive change and dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality. We advocate for comprehensive non-discrimination policies, gender-affirming healthcare coverage, and workplace environments that celebrate diversity. Our dedication to these principles of fairness extend to advocating for policies that protect the rights and dignity of all of our members.

Transgender Day of Remembrance serves as a solemn reminder of the work that lies ahead in building a society free from discrimination and violence based on gender identity. Our union is committed to being at the forefront of this transformative movement. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, we aspire to create an industry where every professional is empowered to thrive—and every patient receives care that is respectful, inclusive, and affirming.

We reflect not only on the lives lost but also on our responsibility to create an environment where transgender individuals are seen, heard, and respected. Our union pledges to continue advocating for policies that safeguard the rights of transgender healthcare professionals and patients alike. Together, we can foster a workplace culture that honors the memory of those who have passed; and work to ensure a brighter, more inclusive future for all members of our community as a whole. To our transgender members who we are grateful for the chance to represent: we see you, and we thank you.
