Automakers Break Promises, UAW Prepares for Possible Strike

UAW Prepares for Possible Strike Amid Heated Negotiations with Automakers

As national negotiations heat up between the UAW and big automakers, Local 328 extends our solidarity and support to our fellow Portland area workers at UAW 492.

Despite raking in massive profits over the past decade, CEOs at Ford, Stellantis, and General Motors continue to push for workers to make concessions. This comes after the UAW worked with big automakers to ensure they would survive the economic fallout of the 2008 recession, agreeing to temporary concessions with the understanding they would be reversed when automakers returned to profitability.

However, despite profits soaring after 2012, these worker concessions are still in place. Now, the workers at the UAW are demanding automakers pay them back for more than a decade of broken promises. The UAW’s recent strike authorization vote that went through with 97% approval sends a strong message: CEOs and shareholders cannot continue taking in infinite profits at the expense of their workers’ lives and bodies.

As negotiations continue, and the UAW prepares for a possible strike, workers at AFSCME Local 328 stand with the UAW as they fight for a fair contract. Whether through sharing resources, platforming your struggle, or showing up to your picket lines, we support the strike-ready workers at UAW Local 492.
