AFSCME Lobby Day

Hello Union Siblings!

On February 17th our statewide AFSCME will be holding a Lobby day in Salem. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the legislative process that can directly impact your everyday work.

What is Lobby Day, and why is it important?

Oregon AFSCME's statewide Lobby Day is an opportunity for our members to meet with their elected officials and share personal stories about serving Oregon and the challenges they face in delivering quality services. Legislators don’t always have firsthand knowledge of what the day-to-day looks like for civil servants. This day is our chance to educate them and spotlight the issues most important to our members.

Members’ stories have consistently proven to be powerful tools in moving the dial on critical issues.

What are the key issues?

This year’s Lobby Day theme is Safety and Staffing. Members will be encouraged to share stories about:

  • Safety concerns

  • High caseloads and understaffing

  • Retention challenges

  • Experiences of being threatened or injured at work

These stories will contribute to our broader legislative campaign, which aims to improve workplace safety policies and secure the resources needed to fully staff and retain workers across the state.

An example of one of the bills being put forward is is LC3359 which would increase the penalty for assaults against healthcare workers.

What should our members expect on Lobby Day?

This year’s Lobby Day will be action-packed! Our members can expect:

  • Lobby Training: Focused on how to effectively share their stories.

  • Worker Safety Report Launch: A briefing on key findings and related bills.

  • Legislative Meetings: Advocating for our suite of safety and staffing bills.

  • Additional Activities:

    • Welcome from legislators

    • Press conference

    • Possible committee hearing

    • Food provided!
